Kapkiyai AA

Kapkiyai AA

Tasting Notes: Delicate, grapefruit & white tea

With the help of Algrano we've sourced this coffee direct from the Kapkiyai Co-operative, in the Rift Valley of Kenya. We selected this, the highest grade 'AA' lot which stood out as a stunning example of Kenyan coffee.

We've kept the roast super light to highlight its beautiful clean acidity and white tea notes. Definitely best as filter or manual brewing, and enjoyed long and black.

The co-operative is to be found on top of one of the highest hills in the picturesque Nandi Hills region. Also known as the home of champions, Nandi County is home to many world- record holders in athletics, including Eliud Kipchoge and Conseslus Kipruto.

Of the 398 members of the Kapkiyai Farmers' Co-operative Society 106 are now women, following a move towards equality over the last decade or so. Women produced 55,000 kgs of the 200,114 Kapkiyai total in 2015, enabling the co-operative to buy an eco-pulper, which can process 1,500 kgs of coffee cherry per hour. <br>In 2018, the women launched the first Fairtrade-certified women-only coffee in the region.

Grown at 2,000 - 2,230 masl, the coffee is harvested from October to January. It is produced by Vava Coffee, pulped, fully washed and dried on raised beds pictured here.
