Vermelha Mantiquera

Vermelha Mantiquera

Tasting Notes: Balanced, cocoa & nutty

Vermelha Mantiqueira is our new house Brazil coffee, sourced through our friends at DR Wakefield.

This coffee is grown in the mountain range that stretches across San Paulo. It also adjoins the Minas Gerais Region which is the geographical home of specialty coffee in Brazil.

This is a blend of coffee from two farms: Sitio Da Torre and Tres Barras, located in the hills surrounding Carmo de Minas.

We selected this coffee for its flavour with a similar cup profile to the very popular Espirito Santo. It has sweetness, a rounded body, and notes of toasted hazelnut and cocoa.

We’ve roasted it medium to create a coffee that is both delicious as espresso and suitable for all brew methods.

Cup score: 84.75

People

Farmer Alvario Coli spends huge amounts of time tending to his crops as well as planning years in advance for future crops, he is a fourth-generation coffee farmer learning from skills passed down by his father and grandfather, he began to focus on speciality coffee in 2002 when he took over the farm from his father. The farm has won Cup of Excellence status no more than 29 times since then, he recently purchased a neighbouring plot of land where they now grow Gesha, Catigue, and Obato using fully organic processes after studying the land closely over the last 5 years.

Tres Barras farm is owned by Jose Junqueira, he runs the farm with his wife and three sons. They own other small farms with Tres Barras as the headquarters. José has become a respected leader in the coffee world for his dedication to quality and sustainability, making Tres Barras a prime example of excellence in the specialty coffee industry.
There are 7800 smallholder producers in the region, 89% of them are smallholders like Alvaro and Jose.

Planet

Farmers who are committed to coffee quality are usually just as passionate about the sustainability of their farming practices. The two go hand in hand. Initiatives include farming techniques that improve soil health and preserve the local ecosystem, while the honey processing method relies on natural sunlight and uses much less water than the often more popular washed process.

Flavour

Coffee is selectively hand-picked largely due to the topography of the farms ensuring only the ripest fruit is processed. Beans are then honey processed; pulped, dried partially in the fruit, and rested for 30-60 days, before hulling. This processing and the red acacia varietal attributes to the sweetness of the coffee. Classic notes of cocoa and nuts typical of the Brazil coffee due to terroir are clearly evident too. Delicious.
